B.C. health officials confirmed 516 new cases of COVID-19 in the province Friday, the lowest daily total in nearly two weeks.
The updated numbers released Friday, in a written statement from Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix, marked the second straight day with fewer than 600 reported cases — a small glimmer of hope following a six-day stretch in which B.C. averaged 675 cases a day, setting several new one-day records.
Other figures continued to trend in less-encouraging directions, however. Health officials reported an additional 10 deaths Friday, bringing provincial totals to 331. It was the third day this week that B.C. has recorded deaths in double digits.
Hospitalizations continued to climb. Ten more residents were admitted to B.C. hospitals on Friday, bringing provincial totals to a record high of 227. This number includes the 57 residents, down from 59 Thursday, receiving treatment in intensive care units.
Outbreaks of COVID-19 at B.C. health-care facilities rose to 62, with the declaration of three more, at Agecare Harmony Court Care Centre in the Fraser Health region, Discovery Harbour Care in Island Health, and Youville Residence in Vancouver Coastal Health.
Henry and Dix reminded residents Friday of the new and expanded provincial health officer’s orders, which came into effect yesterday, including stricter limits on social gatherings and travel and a mask mandate in public spaces.
“The provincewide orders are about all of us seeing fewer people, having safer workplaces and pausing higher risk activities,” they said. “The orders on social gatherings and events are to keep our families and friends safe.”
There have now been 25,474 confirmed coronavirus cases in the province. 17,207 individuals have fully recovered. 7,122 cases remain active.
