Princeton RCMP say a 35-year-old man is dead after crashing a stolen vehicle into a commercial tractor trailer in Manning Park on Wednesday.
Mounties say a pickup truck was reported stolen around 7 a.m. from a residence in Coalmont.
The owner told police he had left the vehicle running in his driveway and watched as someone drove it off his property.
“The owner attempted to follow in another vehicle, eventually losing sight of his truck in downtown Princeton,” RCMP said.
Police later received a report that the truck had rear-ended a parked commercial tractor-trailer unit near the Sunday Summit brake check on Highway 3.
The driver, and lone occupant, was found dead behind the wheel.
“Witnesses reported seeing the truck driving at excessive speed on Highway 3 and not being followed by any other vehicle prior to the collision,” said Penticton South Okanagan RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Jason Bayda.
The RCMP is not releasing the man’s name but they say he was known to police and had no fixed address.
The B.C. Coroners service is also investigating.
