A man has pleaded guilty this week following a 2019 targeted shooting in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
Joseph Bassett, 30, pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder, one count of unlawful possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, one count of breach of a firearms prohibition order, one count of assault with a weapon and one count of aggravated assault.
“Investigators believe that this gang shooting was in relation to control of the drug trade in the Downtown Eastside,” said Const. Tania Visintin.
The shooting involving Bassett was one of three that took place in the neighbourhood over a 15-hour period on Sept. 22, 2019. In total, four people were sent to hospital with injuries.
Police said Bassett was connected to the second shooting, which occurred at 6 p.m. that day near East Pender and Abbott streets. A 28-year-old Langley man and 25-year-old Surrey man were injured and treated in hospital for what police described at the time as non-life-threatening injuries.
Bassett was arrested later that month.
